Managing a Minecraft server requires giving the right players the correct permissions. In this tutorial, you will learn how to give and remove operator (OP) permissions using both the server console and the in-game chat.

Giving OP Permissions Using the Console
To give a player operator permissions through the server console:
- Open your control panel console
- Type the following command:
op PlayerName
- Press Enter
Note: Make sure the player is online on the server before running the command for immediate effect. You can also OP offline players, and they'll receive permissions when they next join.
Giving OP Permissions Using In-Game Chat
You can also give operator permissions directly from inside the game:
- Open the chat (press T)
- Type the following command:
/op PlayerName
- Press Enter
This will immediately grant operator permissions to the specified player if you have sufficient privileges.
Removing OP Permissions (DeOP)
To revoke operator permissions, you can use either the server console or the in-game chat:
deop PlayerName
Or in-game:
/deop PlayerName
Once executed, the player will no longer have operator access.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Command not working? Make sure you're typing the exact username (case-sensitive)
- Can't OP yourself? You may need to use the server console if you're not already an operator
- Player not receiving permissions? Try having them relog to refresh their permissions
- Permission denied? Check if you have sufficient privileges to grant operator status
Best Practices for Operator Management
- Only give OP to trusted players who need administrative access
- Consider using permission plugins (like LuckPerms) for more granular control
- Keep a list of all operators for security purposes
- Regularly review and update operator permissions
- Use different permission levels for different staff roles
